Essential Oils and Hormonal Balance – Research on Essential Oils for Estrogen and Progesterone Regulation

The Role of Essential Oils in Hormonal Balance

Hormonal balance is crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being. It affects everything from mood and energy levels to reproductive health and metabolism. Essential oils, derived from plants, have been used for centuries in various cultures for their therapeutic properties. In recent years, they have gained popularity for their potential role in supporting hormonal balance.

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that capture the plant’s scent and flavor, or “essence.” They are obtained through distillation or mechanical methods, such as cold pressing. These oils are known for their aromatic properties and are often used in aromatherapy to promote physical and emotional health.

How Essential Oils Influence Hormonal Balance

Essential oils can influence hormonal balance in several ways. They can help regulate the endocrine system, which is responsible for hormone production and distribution. Some essential oils have phytoestrogenic properties, meaning they can mimic estrogen in the body, which can be beneficial for women experiencing hormonal imbalances.
Here are some essential oils commonly used for hormonal balance:
  • Clary Sage: Known for its ability to regulate estrogen levels, clary sage can help alleviate symptoms of menopause and menstrual discomfort.
  • Lavender: This oil is renowned for its calming properties and can help reduce stress, which is often a contributing factor to hormonal imbalance.
  • Geranium: Geranium oil is believed to balance hormones by supporting adrenal health and reducing stress.
  • Ylang Ylang: Known for its aphrodisiac properties, ylang ylang can help balance hormones related to sexual health.

Cleansing Xenoestrogens & Phthalates with Essential Oils to support hormone balancing

In today’s world, we are constantly exposed to a variety of chemicals and pollutants that can disrupt our hormonal balance. Among these are xenoestrogens and phthalates.

  • Xenoestrogens are synthetic compounds that mimic estrogen in the body and can lead to a host of health issues.
  • Phthalates are endocrine-disrupting chemicals that can interfere with the body’s hormone systems and have been linked to a variety of adverse health effects across the lifespan.  They aer often present in synthetic or fake fragrance in perfumes, personal care products, candles, and cleaning supplies.

Sadly, Xenoestrogens & phthalates are found in many everyday products and even some foods. They can contribute to hormonal imbalances, weight gain, and increased risk of certain cancers. Cleansing the body of these compounds is crucial for maintaining optimal health.

Fortunately, essential oils offer a natural and effective way to cleanse the body of these harmful substances.

How Essential Oils Help

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that have been used for centuries for their healing properties. They can support the body’s natural detoxification processes and help eliminate xenoestrogens & phthalates.

Research has shown that the phytoestrogenic properties of certain plants can help knock xenoestrogens off of estrogen receptor sites to help restore estrogen balance. While there is not direct research that essential oils detox the body from phthalates, they can support the body’s natural detoxification system.

Here are some of the most effective essential oils for this purpose:

  • Lemon: Lemon essential oil is known for its detoxifying properties, lemon oil can help cleanse the liver, which is crucial for processing and eliminating toxins.

  • Clary Sage: Clary sage is particularly effective in balancing estrogen levels and can help mitigate the effects of xenoestrogens.
  • Magnolia: Magnolia oil is valued for its calming and relaxing effects due to its high concentration of linalool, which helps reduce stress, ease anxiety, and promote better sleep. It is also beneficial for skin health, providing anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and moisturizing properties that can reduce redness and protect against environmental damage. Furthermore, some studies suggest potential neuroprotective, analgesic, and respiratory benefits.
  • Osmanthus: Osmanthus essential oil offers skin cleansing benefits primarily through its antibacterial and antioxidant properties, which help protect the skin from environmental pollutants, germs, and free radicals. These purifying effects can help keep skin clean and prevent the formation of acne, boils, and warts. It is also known for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic qualities, which can soothe skin irritation, calm redness, and address topical ailments like eczema. Its cleansing and hydrating properties ultimately contribute to a brighter, more balanced, and healthier-looking complexion

Scientific Insights and Research

While anecdotal evidence supports the use of essential oils for hormonal balance, scientific research is still evolving. Some studies suggest that essential oils can influence hormone levels and improve symptoms associated with hormonal imbalances. This exciting initial research points to the need for even more research is needed to fully understand their mechanisms and efficacy.

1. Lavender Essential Oil & Menopausal Symptoms

  • Study type: Systematic review of clinical studies
  • Findings:
    • Lavender, delivered as capsules or via aromatherapy, demonstrated beneficial effects on menopausal symptoms including improved sleep quality, enhanced sexual desire, reduced anxiety and depression, and alleviation of physical symptoms such as hot flashes PMC.
    • Another systematic review reported that inhalation of lavender improved sexual desire among menopausal women. A blend containing lavender, fennel, geranium, and rose was more effective in enhancing overall sexual function compared to control groups PMC.

2. Geranium Essential Oil & Estrogen Levels

  • Study type: Experimental olfactory exposure (perimenopausal women)
  • Findings:
    • Exposure to geranium essential oil via inhalation was shown to increase salivary estrogen levels compared to a control odor PubMed.
    • In vitro research using geranium oil (and its component geraniol) indicated weak agonist activity at estrogen receptors (ERα and ERβ). Geranium oil also enhanced tamoxifen-induced cytotoxicity in estrogen-receptor–positive cells, and geraniol similarly disrupted estradiol activity. This suggests geranium’s potential modulatory role in estrogen signaling PMC.

3. Ylang Ylang Essential Oil & Mood (Proxy for Hormonal Effects)

  • Study type: Review of therapeutic uses
  • Findings:
    • Ylang ylang is widely used in aromatherapy for reducing anxiety, easing depression, improving sleep quality, and assisting in stress relief. Though direct hormonal measures weren’t assessed, these effects may denote indirect hormone-related benefits Health.
    • A pilot study (controlled field design) among nursing staff found that consistent use of ylang ylang fragrance (as gel or freshener) over 90 days lowered anxiety levels and was associated with improved self-esteem SciELO.

4. Clary Sage & Menopausal Women Study (2014)

  • Participants: 22 women in their 50s (postmenopausal), some with depressive tendencies.
  • What was measured: Inhalation effects of clary sage on neurotransmitters and hormone markers.
  • Results:
    • Cortisol, the stress hormone, was significantly reduced by about 36% after inhalation.
    • 5-hydroxytryptamine (5‑HT or serotonin) concentrations rose markedly.
    • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels declined, though not to a statistically significant extent.
  • Interpretation: These changes suggest antidepressant-like effects and potential support for mood and stress regulation. Reddit+15PubMed+15TAOEO+15
  • Other studies: Clary sage contains phytoestrogens, plant-derived compounds that may influence estrogen activity, and It may help regulate estrogen-related balance.
Essential oils have been used for centuries in various cultures for their therapeutic properties. In recent years, they have gained popularity for their potential role in hormone regulation, particularly in managing estrogen levels. Estrogen is a crucial hormone in the body, responsible for regulating the menstrual cycle, maintaining bone density, and supporting reproductive health.
