As we slip into February and Mental Health Awareness, I wanted to share a few facts about essential oils and brain health.
Did you know that essential oils are one of the few natural substances that can directly influence the brain within 20 seconds?
When you inhale an essential oil, its volatile aromatic compounds travel through the olfactory nerve straight to the limbic system—the part of the brain responsible for mood, memory, stress response, and emotional regulation.
This direct pathway is why you can feel a shift so quickly.
From a scientific perspective, many essential oils have been shown to
interact with neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, while also
helping regulate inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain.
Oils like lavender, frankincense, peppermint, and rosemary have been extensively researched
for their ability to support calm focus, emotional balance, mental clarity, healthy aging, and healthy sleep.
In fact, a recent study independently concluded that cognition, memory, and neural functioning increased by 226%
with just regular nightly diffusion.
Essential oils offer a versatile, natural, convenient, and safe tool in your self-care tool box
Have you ever noticed how a single scent can instantly change your mood or concentration? That is your brain chemistry responding in real time.
Frankincense is one of the most well-researched essential oils for brain support, largely because of its unique chemical constituents, including sesquiterpenes and boswellic acids.
These compounds are known to cross the blood–brain barrier and have been studied for their role in supporting neuroinflammation balance, cellular protection, and healthy neurotransmitter signaling.
Frankincense Brain Support Protocol
-
Inhalation (Daily): Place 1–2 drops of frankincense in the palms, rub hands together, and take 3–5 slow, deep breaths. This allows the aromatic compounds to directly stimulate the limbic system, supporting emotional regulation, stress reduction, and mental clarity.
-
Topical Application (Morning or Evening): Dilute 1–2 drops with a carrier oil and apply to the temples, behind the ears, or the base of the skull. This method supports local circulation and provides prolonged aromatic exposure.
-
Internal: Only with CPTG (sertified pure tested grade) oils, one drop under the tongue morning and night.
